Why is it so important for women attend.

Oklahoma rates 3rd highest in the country for heart disease and is the leading cause of death among women. The vast majority of heart attacks and strokes are actually preventable.

Biggest misconception.

The biggest misconception is that heart disease is mostly a male problem and only older women get heart disease as a natural process of aging. Heart disease effects men and women equally at all ages. Many women believe that their No. 1 killer is breast cancer when, in reality, 1 in every 7 will die from breast cancer while 1 in every 2 will die from heart disease.

Smaranda Galis, MD, is the co-medical director of Norman Regional’s Stroke Center. She is board certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; and member of the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Stroke Association.

Katherine Hays, MD, is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Internal Medicine, Echocardiography, and Nuclear Cardiology

Liz Shumate

Liz Shumate, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, serves as Manager of Senior Counseling Center and community faculty member of OU Anne & Henry Zarrow School of Social Work.

Teresa Brown

Teresa Brown holds a master’s in public health from the University of Oklahoma and is a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator. She serves as program coordinator for the Norman Regional Nutrition and Diabetes Education Center. She is also a Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coach and Master Trainer with the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
